Woodstock Began 50 Years Ago Today

The Woodstock Music and Art Fair got underway 50 years ago today. 3 days of peace and music on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York. The lineup that included Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Joe Cocker, Santana, CCR, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone, and more than 30 other acts drew more than 400,000 people to the festival.

Traffic was backed up for miles. Arlo Guthrie told the crowd: "The New York State Throughway is closed man!"

There wasn't enough food, a rain storm disrupted the festival, bathroom facilities were scarce, but the show went on and went on to be THE iconic music festival of the 1960's. The Woodstock Generation became part of the American lexicon.

And the couple on the cover of the album are still together.
