Freddie Mercury Stole the Show at Live Aid in 1985

Let's get ready for the film "Bohemian Rhapsody."  The movie opens in theaters, officially, this Friday. But  theaters in St. Louis are starting Thursday night.

Queen's performance at Live Aid is featured in the film. Let's look a little closer at that performance.

In 1985 Queen's stardom looked as though it was fading. They decided to perform at Live Aid.  They took the stage at Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1985, at 6:41pm London Time.

The band was bickering back stage, the tension was high.

Brian May asked Freddie Mercury not to do his famous shout out with the audience, citing the fact that this was not a Queen concert.  The biggest names in Rock n' Roll were playing that day.  U2, Dire Straits, David Bowie, The Who, Elton John and many others.  Brian was not sure how the crowd would react since the other names on the bill had their die hard fans there too. May said "there was an infinite space beneath your feet if  you fall."

Queen did "Radio Ga Ga" that day. The crowd, 72,000 strong, clapped along in unison, on cue to the chorus. The other superstars who were there to perform that day all agreed, Queen had stolen the show.

After Radio Ga Ga was complete, Freddie walked out the center of the stage and sang, Ayyyy-Oh, the crowd responded quite loudly as Freddie continued to lead them in a call and response.  As Freddie begins it, you can see Brian May turn his back to the proceedings, leaving it all in the hands of Freddie Mercury. It will be interesting to see if the film portrays that moment.

No one could command a crowd like Freddie Mercury.

Watchmojo.com called Queen's performance at Live Aid, one of the top ten moments in music history. A list that included Beethoven's live performance of his 9th symphony in 1824!

So let's get ready for Friday and the opening of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by reliving Queen's Live Aid performance.

Ayyyyyy-Oh!!
