IMMIGRATION: Trump Takes Wall Debate Into Prime Time
Donald Trump took his plea for a $5.7 million border wall to the people on Tuesday night on prime-time TV with a speech claiming national security is at risk from the flood of migrants entering the U.S. from Mexico.
During his speech, Trump said, "There is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border. All Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration."
Trump shut down the government to get support for the wall, but it's a gamble that seems to be backfiring. Several Republicans have joined the Democrats calling for end the shutdown, even without funding for his long-promised wall. (Los Angeles Times)
House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer responded, calling Trump out for governing by fear and shutting down the government in a temper tantrum over the lack of support for the wall.
House Democrats To Authorize House Attorneys To Fight For Obamacare In Court -
House Democrats are mobilizing to defend the Affordable Care Act.
They'll vote today to authorize House attorneys to fight a challenge to the law known as Obamacare. Last month a federal judge in Texas agreed with 20 Republican state attorneys general and ruled the law is unconstitutional, but stayed his ruling while the case goes through appeals.
The decision was based on the fact that the lynchpin of the law, the individual mandate, was removed by President Trump.
House Democrats are joining Democratic state attorneys general in appealing the ruling, which will most likely wind up before the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the new House leadership is also preparing to take aim at prescription prices, which is one of very few issues Republicans agree on them with. Several ideas are floating around, but action should begin soon on the issue since big pharma raised medication prices this month.
