Jury Selection Begins In Laquan McDonald Case -

Jury selection starts today for the trial of a white Chicago police officer who shot and killed a black teenager.

Jason Van Dyke shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times while responding to reports of someone with a knife trying to break into cars in 2014. McDonald had a knife on him, and officers initially said that he had threatened them with it.

Dash cam footage from Van Dyke's police car showed him firing at McDonald as the teen walked away from him with the weapon in his hand. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in 2015, right after the footage was released to the public. He has pleaded not guilty.

McDonald’s family is asking for calm throughout the process.
