Department Of Justice Lays Out Why AT&T - Time Warner Merger Shouldn’t Happen -
The Department of Justice is arguing that an appeals court ignored common sense in its ruling that allowed AT&T to purchase Time Warner.
The DOJ opposed the 85-billion-dollar merger of the two communications giants and argued the judge relied on a deeply-flawed assessment of the government's evidence. That deal closed in June and gives AT&T control over CNN, TBS, TNT, HBO and others. The Turner Networks are not scheduled to be part of AT&T's control until February while the government pursues an appeal.
The Justice Department said the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia did not understand the power dynamics when television distributors such as AT&T negotiate with TV programmers over content. The agency also noted that corporations will do what they can to maximize profits… in other words jack up rates for customers.
AT&T had argued it needed the deal to compete with tech companies such as Facebook and Google.

Armed Bystander Stops Gunman At Back-To-School Event -
A back-to-school event could have turned deadly if not for a vendor who shot a gunman.
A weekend back-to-school event in Titusville, Florida was packed with children as a gunman opened fire. Police say a man who had been involved in a fistfight at the Peace in the City rally at Isaac Campbell Park earlier in the day returned late Saturday afternoon and began shooting.
That’s when he was critically wounded by the vendor, who police say was lawfully carrying a firearm. Some 150 adults and children were present, but no one else was injured. “We are extremely grateful that nobody else was injured in this incident,” Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson said in a statement. “This suspect opened fire at a crowded public park. This could have been so much worse.”
Names of the shooter and the vendor have not been released. The vendor will not be charged.
