The Equalizer 2 edged out  Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! by less than $2 million at the weekend box office. The Equalizer sequel, starring Denzel Washington, earned  $35.8 million in its debut, besting the original's opening in 2014.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! was a close second with $34.4 million.  

Sequels dominated the box office. Eight of the Top 10 movies were sequels, a record. 

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation dropped from first to third with $23.2 million.

Ant-Man and the Wasp went from second to fourth with $16.1 million. The Marvel flick has now made $164.6 million.

Incredibles 2 fell a spot, landing in fifth with $11.5 million. The animated sequel has now banked $557 million.


A bunch of highly anticipated trailers were released during last week's Comic-Con in San Diego.

Glass is a sequel to Unbreakable and Split. It stars Bruce Willis, James McAvoy and Samuel L. Jackson. It opens January 18th, 2019.


“Rebecca Romijn Lands On “Star Trek: Discovery”

Actress Rebecca Romijn [[ ro-MAIN ]] is joining the cast of “Star Trek: Discovery. ”

She tweeted a picture of her holding a Star Trek badge and said she's honored to join the show as the character Number One. That character appeared in the original Star Trek's unaired pilot episode. Romijn previously played Mystique in the early X-Men films.

The CBS All Access show will also bring in Spock for its second season.

*Penelope Ann Miller will join the cast of Riverdale for its upcoming third season. She'll play district attorney Ms. Wright on the CW show.

*Buffy the Vampire Slayer will get a reboot with an African-American actress in the lead role. Sarah Michelle Gellar starred in the original TV series. Creator Joss Whedon will return to executive produce.

*Transgender actress Nicole Maines has been cast to play the first transgender superhero on TV. She'll play Nia Nal, aka Dreamer, on the upcoming season of Supergirl.

*Sara Haines will leave The View this fall to co-host a third hour of ABC's Good Morning America with Michael Strahan. The new series will premiere September 10th.

*Elmarie Wendel, who played landlord Mrs. Dubcek on 3rd Rock From the Sun, has died at age 89. She also make appearances on such shows as Seinfeld, Love & War, Murphy Brown, Murder, She Wrote and Empty Nest.
