41 Years Ago Today The Rolling Stones Appear on Saturday Night Live

On October 7, 1978, Saturday Night Live was celebrating the season premiere of their third season. The musical guest was the world's greatest rock n' roll band, The Rolling Stones.

The anticipation was at a fever pitch. The Rolling Stones on Saturday Night Live was enough to keep 20 year olds, (specifically my best friend Sal and I) from going out on a Saturday night. This was before the age of DVR's and even VCR's. The only way to see the Stones, live, was be home and watching.

The Stones were riding the success of the "Some Girls" album, and they had just wrapped up their "Some Girls" tour, which included a few stops in very small venues, including Kiel Opera House in St. Louis, on July 11.

The Stones performed three songs from their new album, "Beast of Burden," "Respectable," and "Shattered."

Here's how it happened, 41 years ago today.
