Dr. John Passes Away

Dr. John has passed away. He was born Malcom John Rebbenack. His nickname was Mac. Dr. John was his stage name, taken from a Voodoo Senegalese prince, a medicinal and spiritual healer who came to New Orleans from Haiti.

Dr. John embodied the New Orleans sound, combining blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock n' roll.

In 1973, he had a top ten hit with "Right Place, Wrong time." Dr. John also won 6 Grammys

One of those grammys was in 1989 for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo Or Group for his duet with Rickie Lee Jones on the Gus Kahn, standard "Makin' Whoopee," which is how I would like to remember Dr. John. Give this song a listen, it's my favorite Dr. John song!

Dr. John was 77.
