Jenny McCarthy Claims Barbara Walters Made Her 'Miserable' On 'The View'

ABC's "The View" - Season 17

Jenny McCarthy says her time on The View was essentially the worst, thanks to her co-host Barbara Walters.

On Wednesday (March 20), Vulture published an excerpt from the book Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of "The View," in which McCarthy, who sat on the panel for the show from 2013 to 2014, revealed the multitude of ways Walters made her experience "miserable."

McCarthy said that once she was inducted into the show, she worried constantly about which version of Walters she would encounter on set, especially considering the matriarch was planning her exit from the show in 2014. “Imagine a woman like Barbara Walters,” she explained. “It’s her last year and she doesn’t want to leave. Think about that. And I’m the new bitch there.”

In one tense interaction, the 46-year-old recalled the time she made the hapless mistake of somewhat correcting Walters during commercial after a Hot Topics segment on Katy Perry.

“She said, ‘Who is it that you’re talking about and why are you bringing her up?’” McCarthy remembered. “I’m, like, ‘That’s Katy Perry. You interviewed her last week!’” she went on, recalling her castmates "kicking me under the table" as a warning signal when dealing with Walters.

McCarthy also said the 89-year-old had an issue with her clothing choices. “If she didn’t agree with it, or it didn’t complement her outfit, I had to change,” she explained, claiming Walters once asked "What the hell are you wearing?" when she appeared in a summer dress on a cold day.

Even though she says Walters never stopped harping on her outfits, McCarthy claims the show's superior wanted to start dressing like her: “There were times when she’d say change, and she’d make people run out and get that dress in her size. I was a human Barbie doll."

Things didn't let up for McCarthy, who became increasingly unhappy with her position. “Every day I went home and I was miserable," she said. "It really was the most miserable I’ve been on a job in my 25 years of show business."

Surprisingly, though, McCarthy had "zero hard feelings" toward Walters during her tenure on The View, adding that she "loved her like a grandma. She didn't know any better."
