My Son Was Groucho Marx For Halloween, When He Was Ten

Today is Halloween! You have your cute little things all dressed as their favorite movie/television/cartoon characters and they are ready to go out for their annual candy haul. But wait! Did you reload their repertoire of jokes for tonight’s festivities?

This is a 100% true story. When my son Chris was in elementary school he insisted on dressing up as Groucho Marx. He got no argument from me. I fear the day when you ask someone about Groucho and they have no idea who you are talking about. To some degree that day is already upon us.

So I roamed the streets of our neighborhood with my little 4th grade Groucho. I asked him, “Do you have your jokes ready?” He assured me he was ready. We walked up to the first house, rang the bell and the woman of the house answered and the first thing she said to Chris is, “Tell me a joke!” Chris replied in his best Groucho impersonation, “I never forget a face, but in your case, I’ll make an exception.” She said, “What did you say?” as she dropped a candy bar into his Halloween decorated pillow case. I quickly interrupted and said, “Thank-you! Happy Halloween!” as Chris and I scampered away. I asked him if he had any other jokes, and he said, again in his best Groucho, “I once shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I’ll never know.”

I said “Yes, use that one.”
