Eight years ago today, October 27, 2011, Game 6 of the World Series between the Cardinals and The Texas Rangers. It was the greatest World Series game I had ever watched and arguably the best game 6 ever. Granted I'm biased, but how can you argue with the Cardinals behind by two runs in the bottom in the 9th. The Rangers were one strike away from winning the World Series. The Cardinals had men on first and second and Lafayette High School graduate, David Freese was up. The count was one, ball and two strikes. Freese hit a triple scoring Albert Pujols (remember him?) and Lance Berkman, tying the game at 7-7.
In the top of the tenth inning, Josh Hamilton put the Rangers ahead with a two run homer.
The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the 11th. With men on first and second, with two outs and again the Rangers within one strike of winning the World Series, Lance Berkman hit a single to drive in the tying run.
Then in the bottom of the 11th inning David Freese, with the count of three balls and two strikes, homered and gave the Cardinals the win. One of the true magic moments in Cardinals history, and Joe Buck with a magical, historic call, saying, "We will see you...tomorrow night." The line was a tribute to his late dad, Jack Buck, saying it exactly the same way Jack said it in game 6 of the 1991 World Series, when Kirby Puckett hit a walk off home run for the Minnesota Twins to bring that World Series to a game 7 against the Atlanta Braves. A great, spontaneus tribute to his dad by Joe Buck.
Here's the best of the last three innings of game 6 of 2011 World Series, that happened 8 years ago today. And as a bonus Jack Buck's call of Kirby Puckett's home run in the 1991 World Series.
